What is Plastic Made Of?

Common Types of Resins

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is one of the most frequently used resins to construct drums. HDPE High-density polyethylene is a highly durable plastic material. One example would be HDPE which is typically used for containing food products such as juice or milk that need to be stored without loss of quality.

But that has a higher melting point, so it can withstand hotter temperatures. As such, PP is suitable for plastic drum container that will contain hot liquids or ingredients that require heating. 

Another type of resin used in drum construction is polycarbonate (PC). Polycarbonate is a transparent and impact-resistant material. That indicates that it is resistant to impacts and won' t snap easily while taking a blow. Due to these characteristics, polycarbonate is commonly used in applications where transparency and visibility of contents are necessary such as medical equipment or safety glasses.

Apart from selecting the appropriate resin, drum makers also have to choose on the thickness of the plastic, which is often called as gauge. Thicker plastic will typically be more secure and protect against impacts or unsophisticated use. There is, however, a trade-off; plastic that thick also makes for heavier drums. That can make it harder to get around or carry them from one place to another. 

Drum makers sometimes incorporated special effects into the drums. They may also include handles, bungs (openings for filling or emptying), or closures. This allows for added features that make it far easier to access the materials within the drum (or move around when necessary). 

How Are Plastic Drums Made?

After the formation of the drum, there may be more processes to complete, such as applying any additional characteristics or labels and markings. And lastly, they will test the strength of each drum to know if what it holds can be supported. This is a crucial testing process because it proves that the drum will not leak while being utilized, nor structurally fail.
